How To Complete Steam Badges Without Spending Money

There’s really no point to the whole Steam Trading Card system. At best, it’s just another feature to interact with—crafting badges to slowly inch up an XP bar, level up, and slightly improve your odds of getting a random booster pack. At worst, it’s a straight-up cash grab for both Valve and the games that support it—at least if you ignore the fact that most cards sell for pennies or dimes.

But there’s always been a part of me that’s interested. The part of me that likes markets. That likes buying and selling cards for small sums of money. (The one who really needs to sit down and play TCG Card Shop Simulator). I’ve always absolutely refused to spend real-world money on these cards, though—not just because it’s a waste, but because it defeats the entire purpose. Where’s the fun if you can just drop $10 and instantly craft 30 new badges? So instead, I’ve come up with my own system for engaging with Steam Trading Cards without spending a dime.

Get Your Free Trading Card Drops

You can skip this step if you’re not a min-maxer; honestly, I don’t even bother most of the time. But if you want to be efficient, make sure to log into each of your owned games and wait for your free card drops. Most games will give you about half of the total cards in their set. For example, Baldur’s Gate 3 has 11 cards in total—I got five random drops before they stopped.

Pray for Random Packs

These add more cards to your collection and make you eligible for random booster packs. Each booster contains three additional cards, with a chance for one to be foil—something base drops can’t offer. Booster packs are handed out randomly as badges for that game are crafted by the community.

This is where leveling up actually matters—every ten levels increase your booster pack drop rate:

  • Level 10: +20% increase in your drop rate
  • Level 20: +40% increase in your drop rate
  • Level 30: +60% increase in your drop rate
  • Level 40: +80% increase in your drop rate
  • Level 50: +100% increase in your drop rate (i.e. the rate has doubled)
  • …and so on.

Just note: free-to-play games don’t give free drops. Their system is different—you’ll usually get one card per ~$9 spent.

Sell Your Duplicate Cards

Assuming you don’t have friends to trade with, the best move is to sell your duplicates and build up your modest Steam Wallet balance. Right now, I’ve got a whopping $0.32 from selling four cards and buying two—with enough bids out there to cover my next six purchases.

It’s totally up to you how greedy you want to be with pricing. Personally, I almost never go for instant sells. I’m patient—I try to squeeze out an extra penny here and there. It’s minor, but over time it adds up to a “free” card just for being patient.

Price Out the Cost of Completing Badges

Once you’ve got some cards, don’t go buying blindly. Instead, check the actual cost to complete each badge by clicking “Buy remaining cards on the market.” That’ll give you the current total. No reason to rush into a $0.67 Baldur’s Gate 3 badge when a $0.19 Cities: Skylines badge earns you the exact same XP.

(Note: These prices reflect my personal cost to complete—not necessarily the lowest prices for each individual card.)

Put in Bids at or Just Above Market Price

You can usually get better deals if you’re willing to wait. Steam quoted my Dead by Daylight badge at $0.12, but I completed it for $0.10 just by waiting a few days. If you’re really patient—and don’t mind being customer #1,087 in the queue—you might save even more.

My two go-to approaches:

  • If the cheapest Buy queue is under 500, match that price.
  • If it’s over 500, go one cent higher to jump the line and get the next sale.

Since time’s the real bottleneck here, I always put in Buy bids as soon as the tiny funds from a sale hit my wallet. Right now, I’ve got $0.32 sitting there—but $0.30 of it is already tied up in active card bids, just waiting to clear.

Wait, Craft Badges, and Repeat

From there, it’s a loop: wait for the cards, craft the badge, sell any new duplicates that drop, and repeat the cycle to slowly level up. No money spent, just a bit of strategy.
